2026-27 Bus Routes

Bus routes can be found in your Infinite Campus Parent Portal account. If your student does not have a bus route assigned and needs one, please complete a Change Request Form or call the transportation department at 651-423-7685. Your student will be placed on a route, based on eligibility. It may take up to two weeks to add a student to a route.

Bus Service Guidelines

Students can get a ride to school if they live at or farther than these distances or have a district determined hazardous crossing:

  • Elementary School: 1 mile or more from school
  • Middle and High School: 1.5 miles or more from school

Note: These rules apply to all students, including magnet and charter/non-public students.

How Distance is Measured

Distance is measured along the shortest safe walking route from the front of your property to the school entrance.

Plan My Ride

Plan My Ride is District 196's new system for planning school bus routes. To help buses run on time, the district will only schedule rides for

students who actually need them, instead of saving a seat for every student automatically.

  • All families must fill out the Plan My Ride form every year, usually in the spring. New students sign up during the online school enrollment process.
  • Telling the district your plans helps them design shorter, better routes so students can rely on a consistent ride.
  • If your schedule changes during the year, you can update your choice anytime using the Transportation Change Request Form.
  • Forms saved in ParenSquare are removed every year on July 1. If you want to keep a copy of your form each year, print or download it before June 30.

Frequently Asked Questions

Here Comes the Bus

Track your student's bus in real time using the free Here Comes the Bus app. The app uses GPS to track the bus-not your child- and sends alerts when the bus is near your stop or if it is running late.

How to Set It Up

  1. Download: Get the free app from App Store for iPhone and Google Play Store for Android.
  2. Log In: Create an account using your email and the District 196 ID: 73500.
  3. Add Your Student: Enter your student's name and their lunch PIN (found in Infinite Campus)
  4. Set Alerts: Choose a distance limit around your stop to get notified when the bus enters the area.

Note: The 2026-27 school year will be the last year District 196 uses Here Comes the Bus.

Bus Safety

School buses are very safe, but students must follow these rules to stay out of danger:

At the Bus Stop

  • Walk on sidewalks or face traffic on the left side of the road.
  • Arrive 5 minutes early. Stay 10 feet back from the curb.
  • Never accept rides from strangers.

Getting On and Off the Bus

  • Wait for the bus to stop completely. Use the handrails - no pushing.
  • If crossing the street, walk 10 steps ahead of the bus, look at the driver, wait for their signal, and check both ways before crossing.

Riding On the Bus

  • Sit down quickly and stay seated while moving.
  • Listen to the driver and keep hands, feet and objects inside the bus and clear of the aisles.
  • No eating, drinking, or fighting.

Danger Zone Warning

  • Stay at least 10 feet away from the front, sides, and back of the bus so the driver can always see you.
