District 196 Response to COVID-19 Friday, March 13

Earlier today, March 13, President Trump announced a national state of emergency and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz declared a peacetime state of emergency in response to coronavirus (COVID-19). District 196 is taking additional actions following today’s announcements and guidance.

Effective Saturday, March 14, all District 196 Community Education evening and weekend classes, and facility rentals are also canceled through March 29. As a reminder, all Minnesota State High School League-sponsored events, games and tournaments are canceled. We are following MSHSL guidelines in allowing practice until further notice.

District 196 schools will continue to remain open, as recommended by the Minnesota Department of Health. School-Age Care (SAC), before- and after-school youth enrichment, Adult Basic Education (ABE), Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE) and Connections Preschool also remain open until further notice. SAC will remain open during spring break. “Schools allow society to function,” Governor Walz told the state, adding that mitigation of COVID-19 will take time.

As part of their individual responses to COVID-19, we ask families to plan for the possibility of students not going to school. We are implementing a plan to allow learning to continue online if this happens. All students and staff should bring district-owned devices home with them each night and back to school with them each day to prepare for this possibility.

As always, the health and safety of our students and staff is our top priority. Parents have the final decision regarding their student. Students will be excused if a guardian decides to remove them from school for any health-related reason. Families are still expected to notify their school that their student will be absent.

We will continue to communicate regular updates through our normal channels, including website, emails and social media.
